After nearly a month in a courtroom, a Bahamian judge in John Travolta’s $25 million extortion case declared a mistrial over alleged jury misconduct yesterday.
The trial ended when a local Parliament politician stated on television and radio that the still-deliberating jury had acquitted former senator Pleasant Bridgewater, one of the defendants. It is believed that one of the jury members was leaking information about the trial out to the Parliament member. It wasn’t made clear whether or not the jury had actually reached a verdict. Regardless, Senior Justice Anita Allen ordered a new trial late Wednesday “in the interest of justice” because of the politician’s statement.
A representative for Travolta released the following statement:
“We are disappointed to hear about the alleged juror misconduct since we know that the Bahamian government, the court, the other jurors and John Travolta as the victim want to have this matter adjudicated through the judicial system. Mr. Travolta has and will continue to cooperate with the Bahamian authorities in the prosecution of the defendants for extortion.”
