Madonna’s planned $15 million school in Malawi for girls is forcing 200 Malawian villagers out of their homes.
The Malawian government informed villagers that the land in Blantyre outside the capital city of Lilongwe had been handed over to Madonna, and asked that they leave the government-owned land.
According to Anjimile Mtila-Oponyo, the soon-to-be principal of the school, the Madonna’s foundation has forked over about $115,000 to help offset the moving costs. That’s about $575 for each person. So far, residents are not impressed and are demanding more money to leave their homes.
Lilongwe District Commissioner Charles Kalemba Kalemba told the villagers: “The government allowed you to occupy this land because there was no project yet, but now that Madonna wants to build you a school you have to give way. This school is the future of our children. You are lucky that Madonna has compensated you for your houses, gardens and trees.”
That’s Madonna speak for ” Listen, pheasants…what the great Madge wants, the great Madge gets.”
